Putting words on a screen
I’ve asked myself a question for a while now, ‘how do I get better at writing?’, and I’ve concluded I simply just have to do it more.
So I have set myself a goal and I am going to write 1000 words a week for the next year.
That’s 52,000 words in total and when put like that it sounds like a lot, but it isn’t. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is 76,944 words long, so at this rate it would take me a year and a half to write the first Harry Potter book, but it’s a start, and starting is the hardest part. Or so they tell me.
Why this structure?
I’m not the most experienced writer, and I don’t want to set a goal that isn’t achievable. Plus a week gives me the flexibility to work out how writing will fit into my life without putting too much pressure on myself.
I have no idea what I m going to write about and I’m presuming I will write a lot of crap. If fact I know I will write a load of crap, and I’m 100% sure that I will not publish everything but that’s okay, I just need to do it. I just need to make a start, write what’s on my mind and see where it takes me.
So here’s to the first 238 words, may the next 51,762 be insightful, coherent and not embarrass me too much!
